Comprehensive Medical Stabilization for the Most Severe Forms of Eating Disorders

Every patient who enters ACUTE receives a highly individualized treatment plan designed to:

  • Manage any medical complications associated with severe anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa
  • Avoid and manage the potentially fatal risks of refeeding syndrome, and
  • Prepare you for a smooth transition into a traditional inpatient or residential eating disorder treatment program

Because almost every part of the body can be adversely affected by progressive malnutrition, the ACUTE Center for Eating Disorders builds an experienced, multidisciplinary team for each patient and eating disorder treatment begins with the critical first step of medical stabilization.

Coordinated, Multidisciplinary Care
ACUTE team members work diligently to develop an individualized and innovative treatment plan for you that includes physical, physiological, mental, emotional, social and nutritional care.

Backed by thirty years’ experience treating the most extreme cases of these diseases, we understand the intensity of denial, the fear of gaining weight and distorted views of body image. We bring a depth of experience, compassion and determination that has proven successful in fostering each patient’s survival and eventual recovery.

No Other Hospital System or Center Can Provide the Same Level of Care

Our team has treated the very sickest of eating disorder patients for over 30 years and provide you the greatest opportunity for hope and recovery. If you are at the point where you or someone your love requires hospitalization due to medical complications from a severe eating disorder, ACUTE is the only healthcare system in the country that is able to medically stabilize and treat all aspects of the eating disorder.

Eating Disorder Treatment is Highly Specialized
Many people don't realize how specialized eating disorder treatment is and rather than seek treatment for the disease, they stay within their local hospital system and treat just the complications that arise from the severe eating disorder. Unfortunately, local healthcare systems are not trained to safely stabilize eating disorder patients, who can then be at risk of even greater complications.

Or, once patients are medically stabilized at their local hospital, they return home without the underlying illness being addressed, which puts them at even higher risk for recurring complications that can become even more severe and life-threatening.

If you or someone you know needs hospitalization for medical complications due to an eating disorder, please contact us immediately.

When you or some we love is seriously ill you would seek care from "the best of the best" in a healthcare system dedicated to treating that illness, no matter the distance, yes? This same philosophy holds true for eating disorders.

We Are the Nation's Experts in Saving Lives from Eating Disorders
At ACUTE, we are 100% focused on the treatment of patients with extreme eating disorders. Through evidence-based research, we know how to safely stabilize our patients. We know what to expect and how to make our patients as comfortable as possible, both physically and emotionally.

In addition to managing the medical complications associated with an eating disorder, we begin the journey of helping our patients recover from their eating disorder. Our team of world-renowned experts utilize the latest research that provides the best possible chance for success.

Patients Travel to Us From Across the Country

The ACUTE Center for Eating Disorders is located on a dedicated medical unit within Denver Health Medical Center in Denver, Colorado. Our patients travel to us from all 50 states in the U.S. and from countries around the world.

We recognize that traveling to another city for care can feel overwhelming. Once you reach out to us, we will partner with you every step along the way. You are no longer alone.

  • We will guide you through the evaluation and intake process.
  • We will help you secure any of the necessary referrals and transfer of medical records.
  • We will work with your insurance company.
  • We will make it as easy as possible for you to make the journey to us in Denver.

And once you are ready to leave our care and “step down” to a lower level of care at a traditional eating disorder center, we will facilitate your transfer of care.

Commercial Transportation
If you are hundreds or even thousands of miles away from Denver, it is our goal to make traveling to us as easy and stress-free as possible. Our intake team will coordinate town car service for pick up at the airport and transportation directly to ACUTE. We can even provide assistance with airline or hotel reservations on your behalf.

Air Ambulance
For patients requiring urgent medical transport, we partner with Angel MedFlight. Their critical care team provides bedside-to-bedside transfers on a fleet of medically configured Learjets to ensure safe, comfortable domestic or international flights for our patients and their families. Angel MedFlight's insurance specialists work with our ACUTE team to verify insurance benefits, and use their experience to expedite the process to get patients the care they need, fast.

Discharge Planning and “Stepping Down”
Patient stays at ACUTE typically average 14 to 21 days. Once you are stabilized and ready to transition from emergent care for your eating disorder to treatment for your eating disorder, we will facilitate your “step down” to that lower level of care at an eating disorder center.

You may already have a center in mind to go to or you may want us to make referrals on your behalf. Regardless of which path you choose, we have working relationships with every major eating disorder center in the nation and we will partner with your center for a seamless transition from our care to theirs.
